Climate: The climate in India varies greatly, from the high mountains of the north, to the central deserts and tropics of the south. On this trip we will visit both the valleys of the Ganges river in Uttar Pradesh and journey high into the Himalayan Mountains, so be prepared for a change in temperature. In the south portion of our trip we will see temperatures of 25C/77F-35C/95F, but as we move north into the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains nighttime temperatures can be around 15C/59F. Expect a lot of sunshine and temperatures ranging from 12C/53F-25C/77F in the daytime but having some warmer clothes to sleep in is nice. However, don't feel that you need to bring much extra clothing. Dharamsala has some amazing hand made clothes suited to the weather available for very cheap.
Accommodation: We have taken a lot of pride in selecting accommodations which are comfortable, clean and quiet, with good food and friendly, helpful staff. We stay in above back packer standard Inns and B&Bs rather than hostels and guesthouses. During your travel adventures we really want your room to be a place where you can get good rest and be ready to make the most of your days.
The People: India is well known in the world for its mystifying cultural diversity. A history of 10,000 years seems to be wired into each and every person. They are some of the most interesting and spiritual people you will ever encounter, and their kindness is second to none. The faces, idols, philosophies and Gods change with each city you go to but the generosity and willingness to help stays the same. In India the common belief is that everything is karmically perfect just as it is. Whatever situation you were born into and whatever experiences you are having is just as it should be. This contentment, or ‘santosha’, of the nation has a beautiful impact on the experience of its visitors.
The Food: The amazing spectrum of flavors and food options in India make eating one of the best parts of any stay. The idea that everything here is super spicy is not true; there are always sweet, savory and spicy options on the menus. Even if Indian food isn't your thing, being a popular tourist destination India has evolved to accommodate a wide variety of tastes. Most menus offer continental foods like pizza, pasta and salads, Chinese options, Thai, and Israeli foods among the Indian choices. Vegetarianism is very common in India but in most locations meat is also available. However, for our North India journey we visit two of Indias Holy Cities, Rishikesh and Varanasi; in these cities meat is illegal and will not be found.
What to Bring: We recommend bringing a backpack about 50-70 liters in size. Although your trip may seem like a long time our best packing advice to you is to bring about half of what you plan to! Seriously, you don’t need much more than some yoga attire, and casual clothing. Less is more when packing as you will want to have room for the awesome and cheap gifts and souvenirs you will find along the way. Laundry is available in almost all of the destinations we visit and if you forget something important you can most likely find everything once you arrive in India.
A Little Bit about Modesty: Although progressive and heavily influenced by the West, India remains a modest society. Please dress with consideration and to keep public displays of affection to a minimum.
Money: We recommend you bring your regular bank card from home to use on your travels. Be sure to notify your bank of your travel plans as irregular activity such as a withdrawal from abroad can cause them to flag your card. There are many international ATMs available where you can withdraw cash. 60 Rupees is around 1 US dollar so no need to worry when you finish up that 1 hour long ayurvedic massage or oil treatment and it costs 600 Rupees, that’s only $10! Tipping: Although not an Indian custom, tipping has become common with the increase in tourism throughout the years. A 10% tip on your bill goes a long way for your server and will definitely put a smile on their face.
Your Group: Groups will range in size from 5-20 people with a wide age range of anywhere from 18 up. We want everyone to feel welcome coming on a Breathe in Life trip. Regardless of the group demographic everyone has something in common right off the bat, you are all here to experience what amazing things India has to offer!
Trip Leaders/Yoga Instructors: All of our trip leaders and yoga instructors at Breathe in Life were chosen because of their passion for life, health, and love for what they do. Our trip leaders are extremely knowledgeable on the places that we go and are there to make sure your trip is as amazing as it can be. All of our yoga instructors come highly experienced and fully certified by the Yoga Alliance.
Extending your Trip: Sometimes when 20 days just isn’t enough time you may want to extend your return flight back to reality. Each airline has different rules in changing flights but generally this can be arranged for a reasonable fee. Solo Travelers: Not a problem at all! We have many travelers who will come solo on our trips and the casual group setting is a great environment to meet new like-minded people. When you are on a Breathe in Life trip, you are always among friends! As far as your accommodations go you have two choices. We can pair you with another solo traveler of the same sex in a double room or you can request your own room for a reasonable surcharge.
Communicating with Home: Staying connected to home is easy to do as all of the places we stay have Wi-Fi, internet cafes and reasonably priced international call lines. If you have an unlocked phone you can also purchase a local sim card for a few dollars.
